Separate the claims before checking the evidence

A jewelry claim is any factual statement about what a ring contains, who made it, or what it is worth. The Federal Trade Commission says U.S. marketers must truthfully represent metal content, gem type, treatment, origin, weight, grade, quality, and value under its Jewelry Guides. Break the description into individual claims.

"An 18-karat white gold ring with a natural, untreated sapphire by Maker X" contains separate claims about metal, fineness, gem identity, treatment, and maker. Evidence should answer the specific claim being made. A seller's description records what the seller asserted; it does not independently prove the assertion. Missing evidence does not automatically prove fraud, but it leaves the claim unverified.

What maker marks and hallmarks actually prove

Start by recording every stamp, symbol, serial number, and inscription inside the ring. Compare those details with the seller's paperwork and any available maker records. A name or logo can support attribution, but it should not override conflicting dates, construction details, or provenance records. UK hallmarks have a narrower, defined purpose.

According to British Hallmarking Council guidance, a complete hallmark identifies the sponsor or maker mark, metal fineness, and assay office. Covered gold, silver, platinum, and palladium articles sold above the applicable exemptions require hallmarking, making missing marks a concrete warning sign under the UK hallmarking guidance.
