Emerald Buying Guide: Oiling, Clarity and Safe Cleaning

Assume an emerald has been treated, because almost all of them have. Emeralds are naturally included and fissured, and filling those fissures with oil or resin has been standard practice for centuries. The treatment is normal; what matters is whether it was disclosed, what was used, and how it changes the way you must clean the stone for the rest of its life.

What emerald is, and why it breaks

Emerald is the green variety of beryl, coloured by chromium and vanadium. It sits around 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale, which sounds durable — and it is misleading. Hardness measures scratch resistance; toughness measures resistance to breaking, and emerald’s toughness is poor because the crystals are typically riddled with inclusions and surface-reaching fissures.

The trade calls that internal landscape the jardin, French for garden. In emerald, visible inclusions are expected and are not automatically a fault. An emerald with no inclusions at all, at a low price, is more likely to be synthetic, glass or another green stone than a bargain.

Oil, resin, and the words on the report

Fissures reaching the surface are filled to reduce their visibility. Fillers differ in how permanent they are:

  • Cedarwood and similar oils — traditional, and reversible. Oil can dry out, leak or be washed out, and the fissures then become visible again.
  • Polymer resins — more durable than oil, and harder to remove if the stone ever needs re-treating.
  • Coloured fillers — add apparent colour as well as clarity, and are treated far more seriously by laboratories.

Laboratory reports usually grade the extent of filling as none, minor, moderate or significant. That single line moves price substantially, so ask for it. Under the FTC Jewelry Guides, treatments must be disclosed when they are not permanent, when they create special care requirements, or when they significantly affect value — emerald filling meets all three.

Judging an emerald

Care: the rules are not optional

  1. Never use an ultrasonic or steam cleaner. Both can drive filler out of the fissures and can propagate an existing break. This is the single most common way owners damage an emerald.
  2. Clean with lukewarm water, mild soap and a soft brush, then dry gently.
  3. Keep it away from solvents — acetone, alcohol and some cleaning products attack fillers.
  4. Avoid heat. Tell any jeweler that the ring contains an emerald before repair work; the stone should be removed or a laser welder used, as covered in what happens when a ring is resized.
  5. Expect re-oiling. An oiled emerald may need re-treating after some years. It is routine work, and it is a reason to keep the original report.

Settings that suit a fragile stone

Protect the corners and the girdle. A bezel or half-bezel shields the most vulnerable edges; V-prongs cover the corners of a step cut. Tall, exposed prong settings put an emerald where it will be knocked. If the ring will be worn daily on a working hand, a low-profile setting is not a compromise — it is the difference between a stone that survives and one that chips. Synthetic emerald and simulants

Laboratory-grown emerald is real emerald by composition and must be disclosed as laboratory-created or laboratory-grown. Separately, several cheaper green materials are sold in emerald’s place — green glass, dyed beryl, green cubic zirconia, and doublets assembled from two pieces. Price and clarity are the warning signs, and a laboratory report is the answer.

Frequently asked questions

Are all emeralds oiled?

Not literally all, but the great majority are filled to some degree, and untreated stones with good colour and clarity are rare and expensive. Ask for the extent of filling as stated by a laboratory rather than for a yes-or-no answer.

Does oiling make an emerald fake?

No. It is an accepted, centuries-old practice. What matters is disclosure, the type of filler, and knowing that the treatment is not permanent.

Can I wear an emerald ring every day?

You can, in a protective setting and with realistic expectations. It will not tolerate impacts the way a sapphire will, and it should come off for anything physical.

Why did my emerald go cloudy?

Most often the filler has dried out, leaked or been removed by cleaning, making the fissures visible again. A gemologist can confirm, and re-treatment is usually possible.
