There is no rule that says an engagement ring should cost two or three months’ salary — that figure came from twentieth-century diamond advertising, not from any standard. What actually moves the price is a short list of variables, and three of them are worth far more per dollar than the rest.

Carat weight steps, it does not slide
Prices jump at the round numbers — 0.50, 0.70, 1.00, 1.50, 2.00 carats — because demand clusters there. A stone just under a threshold can cost noticeably less than one just over it while measuring only fractions of a millimetre smaller across the top.
It also helps to remember that carat is weight, not size. Going from 1.00 to 2.00 carats doubles the weight but increases the diameter of a round brilliant by only about a quarter. If face-up size is what you want, a well-cut shallower stone, a halo, or a shape with a large surface area for its weight (oval, marquise, pear) buys more visible spread per dollar than raw carat weight does.
Spend on cut before anything else
Cut is the only one of the four Cs that is about workmanship rather than the material. It governs how light enters, bounces and returns to the eye, and a poorly cut stone of high colour and clarity can look duller than a well-cut stone two grades lower on both. GIA grades cut for standard round brilliants on a scale from Excellent to Poor; fancy shapes do not receive an overall GIA cut grade, so for those you are judging proportions, symmetry and how the stone actually looks in person.
Stop paying for grades you cannot see
- Clarity. Once inclusions are not visible to the unaided eye at normal viewing distance, higher grades add cost and nothing visible. Ask for an eye-clean stone and look at it yourself.
- Colour. Adjacent grades are difficult to separate face-up outside a lab environment, and a warm metal masks warmth in the stone. A near-colourless stone in yellow gold usually reads as white.
- Fluorescence. Strong blue fluorescence can reduce the price and is usually invisible in ordinary light. Look at the specific stone rather than the label.
Laboratory-created stones changed the arithmetic
Laboratory-grown diamonds are chemically and physically diamond, and prices for them have fallen dramatically as production has scaled — which is exactly why disclosure matters. The FTC Jewelry Guides require a clear and conspicuous disclosure that a stone is laboratory-created, using terms such as “laboratory-created” or “laboratory-grown”, so that no buyer can be left uncertain about what they are purchasing.
Two practical consequences: a lab-grown centre stone frees a great deal of budget for cut quality, a better setting or a larger stone; and resale expectations should be set accordingly, because a rapidly falling new-goods price sets the ceiling for second-hand value.
Budget the setting properly
The setting is not an afterthought — it decides whether the ring survives daily wear. A tall four-prong solitaire shows the most stone; a bezel protects it best; a halo makes a smaller centre stone read larger. Metal choice affects both price and maintenance: white gold is rhodium-plated and needs re-plating over time, platinum costs more up front and does not. Work through the trade-offs in setting styles compared before locking the budget split.
A process that avoids overspending
- Decide the total, including tax, sizing and insurance for the first year.
- Fix the shape and the approximate face-up size you want. Those are the aesthetic decisions.
- Buy the best cut you can inside that shape.
- Drop colour and clarity to the point where the stone is still eye-clean and reads white in the chosen metal.
- Decide natural or laboratory-created deliberately, and get the disclosure in writing on the invoice.
- Insist on a laboratory report from a recognised laboratory for any significant centre stone, and keep it — an insurer will ask, and so will an appraiser.
