How to tell if your jade is investment grade

Jade is a beautiful and highly valued stone, especially when it’s of investment grade. But how can you tell if your jade is truly worth investing in? Here are some simple ways to identify investment-grade jade.

**Look at the Color**

Color is one of the most important factors. The best jade has a rich, vibrant green color that looks almost glowing from within. This type of green is often called “imperial green” and comes from high-quality Burmese jadeite. The color should be even throughout the stone without too many dark spots or patches. Some other colors like lavender, white, or yellow can also be valuable but green remains the most prized for investment.

**Check the Texture**

Texture means how smooth and fine-grained the jade feels and looks under light. Investment-grade jade has a very smooth texture with a slightly oily or waxy shine rather than looking dull or grainy. When you hold it up to light, good quality jade lets some light pass through softly but doesn’t look cloudy or hazy.

**Transparency Matters**

The more transparent your jade is (without being see-through like glass), generally the higher its value. You want to see a soft glow inside when light shines on it — this shows good quality crystal structure inside.

**Avoid Fake Jade**

Fake or treated jades are common in markets today so watch out for signs like spiderweb patterns inside when shining a flashlight through them — this usually means lower-quality “B” grade treated stones rather than natural ones.

**Origin Counts Too**

Jade from Myanmar (formerly Burma) tends to be more valuable because it’s known for producing top-tier stones with excellent color and texture compared to other sources worldwide.

If your piece ticks these boxes—vibrant imperial green color, smooth waxy texture, nice transparency without cloudiness—and comes from Burma, chances are you have an investment-grade piece of jade that could hold its value well over time.
