How to care for and store your jade investment

Caring for and storing your jade plant properly helps it stay healthy and beautiful for years. Jade plants are popular succulents that thrive with some simple attention to their needs.

**Light Needs**
Jade plants love bright light but not harsh direct sun. Aim to give them about 4 to 6 hours of bright, indirect sunlight daily. A spot near a south- or west-facing window is ideal because it provides plenty of light without burning the leaves. Too much direct sun can cause leaf shriveling or browning, while too little light makes the plant leggy and sparse.

**Watering Tips**
One of the most important things is not to overwater your jade plant. Let the top couple of inches of soil dry out completely before watering again—usually every 2 to 3 weeks depending on your home’s humidity and temperature. Overwatering leads to root rot, which is a common killer for these plants. In winter, reduce watering even more since growth slows down.

**Soil and Pot Choice**
Use well-draining soil designed for succulents or cacti—a mix that includes sand, perlite, or pumice works best because it prevents water from sitting around roots too long. Terracotta pots are great because they absorb excess moisture and allow air flow through their porous walls. Make sure your pot has drainage holes at the bottom so water can escape easily.

**Temperature and Placement**
Keep your jade plant in temperatures between about 65°F to 75°F (18°C–24°C). Avoid cold drafts or letting it sit below 50°F (10°C), as cold can damage its leaves and roots.

**Pruning Your Jade Plant**
If you notice stems getting leggy or sparse, prune them back in early spring using clean scissors or pruning shears. This encourages bushier growth so your jade stays compact rather than stretching out like a mini jungle.

When storing a jade plant temporarily—such as during travel—place it somewhere with indirect light but away from extreme heat or cold drafts. Don’t water before storage; wait until you’re ready to care for it again so roots don’t sit wet in stagnant soil.

By following these straightforward steps—bright indirect light, careful watering with dry intervals, well-draining soil in terracotta pots, moderate temperatures, occasional pruning—you’ll keep your jade investment thriving indoors without fuss!
